Want to know a little more about Xploro? These are some of the most frequently asked questions people have.
Whether you’re a parent whose child is using Xploro for the first time, or you work at a healthcare organization, you’ll find technical information, answers about accessibility, and learn some of the ways we protect children and their data.
For healthcare organizations
Admins and clinicians, this information is for you
The best for your patients
Xploro is modular meaning organizations can invest in content which suits their patients. It’s also customizable meaning much of the content can be changed so it’s perfect for your hospital.
For example, you might choose to take the radiology, oncology and proton therapy modules, but not the sedation and out patient modules. Then you might decide to have the needles and injections module but with updates so it looks exactly like your facility when children are playing it.
You might also want additional staff members adding and a bunch of questions specific to your hospital.
Flexibility
In order to offer this kind of flexibility we made our pricing plan flexible as well. Once you’ve subscribed to the core content, you only pay for additional modules and customized content.
To find out what that works out at for your organization, get in touch with the Xploro team who’ll be happy to demonstrate the app, parent dashboard and clinician’s portal, and discuss what works best for you.
Yes. We make bespoke content all the time. You might need a special treatment environment building, or a game designing to reinforce your organization’s specialism. Maybe you want additional questions including in the chatbot’s knowledge base or a particular uniform for the Xploro staff avatars — just get in touch for a quote.
Patient interaction is incredibly valuable and that’s why we offer a number of ways to connect with children using Xploro.
Questionnaires
Xploro Questionnaires offer your organization the chance to collect patient reported outcome and experience measures (PROMs and PREMs) directly from the app and into their Electronic Health Record (EHR). Questionnaires are easy to set up and can be sent to individuals or groups of patients. When the patient opens their app, they receive a prompt to let them know there’s a new questionnaire for them.
Mood diary
The Xploro Calendar asks patients how they are feeling every day and they answer using special Xploro emojis. Aggregated responses allow healthcare teams to understand how their patients respond to events such as treatments or diagnostic procedures.
Videos
Our Videos module gives you the opportunity to upload content for your patients. You might want to include a welcome message, information about your facility, or supporting materials about procedures to reinforce or remind them what it’s going to be like.

Xploro is used by hospitals and healthcare organizations around the world.
We are proud to partner with the biggest children’s hospitals in the United States, the most important cancer centers in the UK, World Child Cancer where we supply Xploro free of charge to hospitals in Ghana and Malawi, and organizations at the center of cancer care and research in the European Union.
To access and use the app, the child’s device must meet the following minimum specifications:
- iPad / iPhone: iOS 13.0 or later
- Android tablet / phone: Android 8.0 or later with a minimum of 2GB RAM
Please note — depending on Android device, some AR functionality may not be supported due to camera and hardware limitations. This is because of Google’s minimum specifications required for AR content rather than the Xploro app configuration and implementation.
Xploro is currently available in UK and US English, Spanish and Latin American Spanish and Chichewa with more languages coming soon.
The chatbot recognises that there are certain questions that no chatbot should attempt to answer, in these cases the child is referred to a human — their doctor or caregiver.
A study into the acceptability of Xploro by Professor Lucy Bray, a leading pediatric healthcare researcher in the UK, found:
- Significantly lower levels of procedural anxiety in both children and parents
- Children felt more involved in their procedure
- Significantly higher levels of perceived procedural knowledge
